My Approach

Before dedicating myself full time to the craft of writing, I worked in the tech startup world for over ten years.  I built and managed teams of 30+ people, exceeded 8-figure revenue targets, rose to the executive ranks of a $100M+ company, and raised venture capital to start and run my own business.

In the midst of this, I maintained a rigorous creative writing practice, publishing dozens of essays and short stories that have garnered tens of thousands of reads.  I officiated weddings, won storytelling competitions, and hosted an ongoing series of creativity workshops.

While this practice is deeply fulfilling in itself, its value has gone far beyond this. There’s no clear line between my creative and professional skill sets, and the impact this fuzziness has had on my life and career is immeasurable.  I’ve always believed that my ability to craft authentic, compelling stories – and by proxy, to connect with, influence, and inspire others – has been my greatest asset.

And as a longtime coach, manager and mentor, few things bring me more joy than inspiring others to find this storytelling ability within themselves.

There’s no shortage of books and services offering the formula for the perfect written composition – from the admissions essay to the business pitch to the social or professional speech.  Many of these methods have merit, and I incorporate them into my own approach.

The science, though, is only half of it, and the other half is more difficult to teach.

The art of writing, at its essence, is an expression of one’s truest self.  There is no one-size-fits-all, and by definition, it cannot be learned from a book.

But there is a generative process that enables us to harness our innermost voice.  It involves self-exploration, streaming of consciousness, ideating, sifting, sorting, and a gradual structuring, from which a compelling narrative – one that only you could have written – emerges in all of its textured glory.  This narrative will grip its intended audience, whoever that might be, and move them on a deep, meaningful level.

Anybody who has ever stared at a blank page and thought, I have nothing to say, understands how intimidating the writer’s journey can be. But you don’t need to embark on it alone.

Through my coaching, you’ll find and hone your own singular writer’s voice.  You’ll come away with a finished written product that’s as authentic as it is impactful, and a crucial set of creative skills that will serve you through a lifetime of storytelling.
